Sewer chemistry & network performance

Magnesium Hydroxide for Odour & Corrosion Control

Magnesium hydroxide liquid supplies alkalinity for pH control and can help manage hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) release in suitable sewer applications. Critical Elixirs combines chemistry selection with in-network dosing efficacy calibration: checking what the pump delivers, where the treatment reaches and how downstream conditions respond.

Who this is for

Sewer utility operators, wastewater engineers and asset owners

Your operating priority

Manage odour and corrosion risk while verifying that the dosed chemistry remains effective through the network.

Before you specify or buy

Compare Basic and Premium on current specifications and site evidence. Calibrate actual pump delivery and review downstream pH, sulphide and H₂S response under comparable network conditions.

Product samples, field equipment and testing

Real product samples, sampling, measurement and dosing equipment. Photographs document the work shown; quantified outcomes require the relevant sampling context, method and records.

Field pH measurement. Calibration, sample conditions and treatment objectives are needed to interpret the reading.
  • Field meter displaying pH, ORP and dissolved-oxygen measurements
Field pH, ORP and dissolved-oxygen measurements. ORP is not a direct SRB count or proof of sulphide removal.

Available options

Option 01

pH Elixir Basic

A magnesium hydroxide liquid product option assessed against the treatment duty, water chemistry, storage and dosing equipment. Request current specification and SDS, then establish a suitable operating dose through testing and monitoring.

Option 02

pH Elixir Premium

Another product option within the range. Compare current grade specifications, handling requirements and site results with Basic. The Premium name alone is not evidence of greater efficacy, lower cost or a lower required dose.

Compare the current specification, handling requirements and suitability against your water, operating duty and site data. Details are confirmed through enquiry.

What is covered

  • Magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)₂, is a sparingly soluble alkaline material supplied in liquid suspension form for suitable dosing duties.
  • Odour control: increasing pH can shift dissolved sulphide away from volatile H₂S; the response depends on network conditions and the treatment programme.
  • Corrosion control: reducing H₂S release can help manage one driver of sewer-headspace corrosion, but does not repair existing damage or establish remaining asset life.
  • In-network dosing efficacy calibration checks delivered flow, pump settings, network travel conditions, downstream pH, treatment persistence and relevant sulphide/H₂S trends.
  • Set a baseline, agree monitoring points and review performance under comparable conditions before interpreting dose changes or treatment savings.

What we will ask you

  • Network layout, travel time, flow patterns and dosing points
  • Current product, pump calibration, actual delivered dose and storage arrangement
  • Upstream and downstream pH, sulphide and H₂S records where available
  • Odour complaints, corrosion observations and the operating objective

Important information

  • Magnesium hydroxide dosing is not a substitute for workplace exposure assessment, confined-space controls or competent safety advice.
  • Lower gas-phase H₂S does not by itself prove total sulphide removal, worker exposure compliance or a particular reduction in corrosion rate.
  • Basic and Premium remain distinct options within one family page. Confirm current grade specifications and SDS; do not infer hazard classification from this page.
  • Septine and Suppressor are separate formulations, not alternative names for this product range. Their evidence must be assessed separately.

Straight answers

Frequently asked questions

Does magnesium hydroxide dosing remove all sewer sulphide?
Not necessarily. Added alkalinity and pH change can reduce the proportion present as volatile hydrogen sulphide without proving total sulphide removal. Assess actual delivery and downstream network response. Basic and Premium selection should follow current specifications, equipment requirements and site evidence.
How does magnesium hydroxide help with sewer odour control?
It supplies alkalinity and can raise wastewater pH, shifting the sulphide balance away from volatile hydrogen sulphide. Actual odour response depends on dosing, wastewater conditions and the network; site monitoring is needed.
Can magnesium hydroxide prevent sewer corrosion?
It can support a programme that manages H₂S release and associated corrosion risk. It does not guarantee corrosion prevention, reverse existing damage or replace condition assessment.
What is in-network dosing efficacy calibration?
It checks both the actual chemical delivery and the downstream treatment response. Pump output, dose records, network travel conditions, pH and appropriate sulphide/H₂S monitoring are reviewed together rather than treating a pump setting as proof of treatment efficacy.
Does a higher dose always give better odour control?
No. Check actual delivery, mixing, contact time and downstream response before increasing dose. Compare results under similar operating conditions to avoid confusing network variability with chemical performance.
How do Basic and Premium differ?
Request current product specifications and compare the grades on your site duty. No numerical concentration, stability, dose or cost advantage is assumed here.
